Ibn ʿAdī said, “Shādh narrated nothing from Shuʿbah other than this single ḥadith.” (1)
- Al-Qāḍī ʿAbd al-Jabbār ibn Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd al-Jabbār ibn Aḥmad ibn Khalīl al-Hamadhānī—
the erudite scholar, dialectical theologian, and leading figure of the Muʿtazilah, better known as Abū al-Ḥasan al-Hamadhānī (2). He was the author of numerous works and counted among the foremost jurists of the Shāfiʿī school.
He heard ḥadith from ʿAlī ibn Ibrāhīm ibn Salamah al-Qaṭṭān—apparently the last of that teacher’s pupils—as well as from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jaʿfar ibn Fāris in Isfahan, from al-Zubayr ibn ʿAbd al-Wāḥid the ḥāfiẓ, and from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ḥamdān al-Jallāb.
Those who transmitted from him include Abū al-Qāsim al-Tanūkhī, al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī al-Ṣaymarī the jurist, Abū Yūsuf ʿAbd al-Salām al-Qazwīnī the exegete, and a number of others.
(1) I note that Hashim ibn al-Qasim gives the same corroborating chain in the Sunan of al-Darimi, 1/289. Muslim also records the report (no. 469/189), as do al-Tirmidhi (no. 237) and al-Nasai, 2/94, all through Qutaybah ibn Sa id – Abu Awanah – Qatadah – Anas. Muslim further transmits it through Yahya ibn Yahya from Abu Awanah with the same isnad.
Al-Bukhari (no. 708, Book of Adhan) and Muslim (no. 469/190) relate it through two other chains from Sharik ibn Abd Allah ibn Abi Namr, who said: “I heard Anas ibn Malik state, ‘I have never prayed behind any imam whose prayer was lighter yet more complete than that of the Prophet.’ ”

(2) Some sources add the nisba “al-Asad Abadhi,” referring to Asad Abadh, a small town one stage before Hamadhan on the road from Iraq. Al-Samani entered him under this nisba in al-Ansab. In Idah al-Maknun, Hadiyyat al-Arifin and Shadharat al-Dhahab it was corrupted to “al-Istirabadhi.”
