and then made his way to Shiraz, and I was informed that he died there in 411 AH—so he said.
As for Abū al-Qāsim ibn Manda, he stated that the death occurred in Shawwāl of 407 AH, and that is the more likely date.
I say: he was one of the champions of ḥadīth, widely travelled; in Marw he met ʿAbd Allāh (1) ibn ʿUmar ibn ʿAllak.
Al-Mustaghfiri said: “I heard him relate: ‘A dispute arose between me and the ḥāfiẓ Ibn al-Bayyiʿ about ʿAmr ibn Zurārah and ʿUmar ibn Zurārah. He claimed they were one and the same. So I referred the matter for arbitration to Abū Aḥmad al-Ḥākim, and we asked him, “What does the shaykh say about someone who claims that ʿAmr ibn Zurārah and ʿUmar ibn Zurārah are one?” He replied, “Who is this drum (2) who cannot tell the two apart (3)?”’”
Abū al-Maʿālī Aḥmad ibn Isḥāq ibn Muḥammad al-Qarāfī informed us; Abū Sahl ʿAbd al-Salām ibn Fataḥah informed us in the year 618 AH, in person; Shahrdār ibn Shīrawayh al-Daylamī informed us; Abū Bakr Aḥmad ibn ʿUmar al-Bayyiʿ informed us; Abū Ghānim Ḥamīd ibn Maʾmūn informed us in 444 AH; Abū Bakr Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Shīrāzī informed us; Abū Aḥmad ibn ʿAdī informed us; Muḥammad ibn ʿUthmān ibn Abī Suwayd narrated to us; Shādh ibn Fayyāḍ narrated to us; Shuʿbah narrated to us, from Qatādah, from Anas, who said:
“The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to pray in the briefest manner while still completing the prayer perfectly.”
