With this same chain, al-Khaṭīb (1) said: “Abū al-ʿAlāʾ al-Wāsiṭī narrated it to us, saying: al-Muzanī related it to us, and in his wording the name appears as ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmr al-Fihrī.”
Aḥmad ibn Salāmah informed me, from Yaḥyā ibn Asʿad, from Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd al-Jabbār al-Ṣayrafī, who said: “Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-ʿAtīqī wrote to me: ‘Abū Masʿūd the ḥāfiẓ narrated to us; Abū Bakr Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Qāsim of Nahr al-Dayr narrated to me; Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm ibn Ḥammūyah (2) at Basra narrated to us; Abū al-Walīd narrated to us; Yaʿlā ibn al-Ḥārith al-Muḥāribī narrated to us; Iyās ibn Salamah narrated, saying:
“My father said, ‘We used to perform the Friday prayer with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and there was no shade from any wall under which we could take shelter.’”’”
Muslim (3) recorded the report from Isḥāq ibn Rāhwayh, from Abū al-Walīd, and it is corroborated by Wakīʿ ibn al-Jarrāḥ.

…with the small “throwing pebbles.” A corroborating chain comes from the report of al-Fadl b. al-Abbas, recorded by Ahmad 1/210, Muslim 1282, and al-Nasa’i 5/269: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ addressed the people on the eve of Arafa and the morning of al-Jam‘ as they set out, saying, “Maintain composure,” while he was holding back his camel; then, when he entered the descent into Muhassir, he said, “Take the ḥasa al-khadhf, the pebbles with which the jamra is stoned.”
Khadhf (with a silent dhal) means to fling a pebble or date-stone held between the two forefingers, or to use a small wooden sling grasped between thumb and forefinger. The expression ḥasa al-khadhf therefore designates the tiny pebbles. The valley of Muhassir received its name because the elephant of the “People of the Elephant” halted (hasara) there, i.e. became exhausted and unable to proceed.

(2) The word “bin” is missing from the base manuscript; it is restored on the authority of al-Dhahabi, Tadhkirat al-Huffaz, 3:1070.
(3) Hadith no. 860 (31) (32) in the chapter “The Friday Prayer when the sun declines.” Through the same isnad from Ya‘la b. al-Harith it is also transmitted by Ahmad 4/64; al-Bukhari (4168) in “The Expedition of al-Hudaybiya”; al-Darimi 1/363; al-Nasa’i 3/100; and Ibn Majah 1100. The report supports the view that the Friday prayer may be performed before the sun passes the meridian—a position held by Imam Ahmad; see the detailed discussion in al-Mughni 2/356.
