He and the renowned scholar Abū Bakr al-Muʿayṭī(1) together compiled the book al-Istiʿāb(2) on the Mālikī school, in one hundred parts, for the Andalusian ruler al-Mustanṣir(3). The ruler was pleased, rewarded them with a sizeable sum, and appointed them to the consultative council.
Among those who studied jurisprudence under Ibn al-Makwī was Abū ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-Barr, who received from him the Mudawwana.
He died suddenly in Jumādā al-Ūlā of the year 401 AH, at the age of seventy-seven, and his funeral was widely attended. May Allah have mercy on him.
