118 – Ibn al-Rassān, Aḥmad ibn Fatḥ ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Qurṭubī *
The venerable, eminent, and reliable shaykh and hadith scholar, Abū al-Qāsim Aḥmad ibn Fatḥ ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAlī al-Qurṭubī—himself a merchant and frequent voyager—was commonly known as Ibn al-Rassān.
He performed the pilgrimage and studied under Abū al-Ḥasan ʿUtbah al-Rāzī, Ḥamzah al-Kinānī, al-Ḥasan ibn Rashīq, and Isḥāq ibn Ibrāhīm, the jurist of Córdoba. He also acquired a copy of Sahih Muslim from Abū al-ʿAlāʾ ibn Māhān.
Those who narrated from him include the two companions Ibn Maymūn and Ibn Shinẓīr, together with Yūnus ibn ʿAbd Allāh, Muḥammad ibn ʿAttāb, Abū ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-Barr, and al-Khawlānī, who said: “He was a righteous man, firmly upon guidance and the Sunnah. He composed a work on the laws of inheritance and possessed a wealth of elevated benefit-lists (1).”
Another authority related that he died at the age of eighty-four, in the month of Rabīʿ al-Awwal, while in hiding after harsh pursuit stemming from confiscation and oppression.
Ibn Ḥazm, in his writings, transmits through an intermediary from him.
He passed away in 403 AH.
