Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

al-Harrās, Abū Yaʿlā Muḥammad ibn Sufyān, ʿAlī ibn ʿUbayd Allāh al-ʿAllāf, Ibrāhīm ibn Muḥammad al-Jummārī (1), and a number of others.

He was on especially close terms with the vizier Fakhr al-Mulk (2) and served as his boon companion.

He died in the year 409 AH.

114 – al-Khuzāʿī, Abū al-Qāsim ʿAlī ibn Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad

The shaykh, the trustworthy, the scholar, the ḥadīth specialist: Abū al-Qāsim ʿAlī ibn Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan al-Khuzāʿī al-Balkhī, a descendant of the one who spoke with the wolf, Uhban ibn ʿIyāḍ al-Khuzāʿī (3).

He heard from al-Haytham ibn Kulayb al-Shāshī his Musnad, the Book of Shamāʾil, Ibn Qutaybah’s Gharīb al-Ḥadīth, and other works. He lived to an advanced age and transmitted reports in which he was the sole authority.

(1) Ibn Nuqtah mentions him in Al-Istidrak, fol. 102 b, specifying that the name is vocalised with a damma on the jim, a shadda on the mim, and a kasra on the ra after the alif. He is Abu al-Barakat Ibrahim ibn Muhammad ibn Khalaf al-Jammari, from Wasit. See also Tabsir al-Muntabih 1/346 and Sualat al-Hafiz al-Salafi, p. 30. A full biography of his son Muhammad ibn Ibrahim will appear in volume 19. (2) The manuscript reads “Fakhr al-Dawla,” which is incorrect; the person meant is Fakhr al-Mulk, whose biography will appear later in this volume under no. 173. (*) Al-Ibar 3/107; Shadharat al-Dhahab 3/195. (3) The manuscript has “Ahiban ibn Sayfi,” which is wrong. The correct form is Ahiban ibn al-Akwaʿ ibn Iyadh ibn Rabiʿa al-Khuzaʿi. He was one of the Companions who pledged under the Tree, used to offer a single sheep as a sacrifice on behalf of his family, and is reported to be the man to whom the wolf spoke—though another report attributes the episode to Ahiban ibn Aws al-Aslami. He said: “I was with my sheep when a wolf seized one of them. I shouted at him; he sat back on his tail and addressed me, saying: ‘Who will guard her on the day you are distracted?’” See Al-Isabah 1/78; Al-Istiyab (margin) 1/64; Tahdhib al-Kamal, fols. 127–128; and Tahdhib al-Tahdhib 1/380.
