Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Bakr ibn Muḍar transmitted from Mūsā ibn Jubayr, from Abū Umāmah ibn Sahl, who said: ʿUrwah and I once visited ʿĀʾishah. She said, “If only you had seen the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during one of his illnesses. I had six—no, perhaps seven—dīnars with me, and he ordered me to distribute them. His sickness so occupied me that I forgot, until Allah granted him recovery. He then asked me about the coins, called for them, placed them in his palm and said, ‘What would the Prophet of Allah think were he to meet Allah while these were still in his possession?’”

Jaʿfar ibn Sulaymān related through Thābit from Anas that the Prophet ﷺ would not set anything aside for the following day.

Bakkār ibn Muḥammad al-Sīrīnī said: Ibn ʿAwn narrated to us from Ibn Sīrīn, from Abū Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ once entered upon Bilāl and found with him a heap of dates. He asked, “What is this, Bilāl?” He replied, “Dates I am storing.” The Prophet said, “Woe to you, Bilāl! Do you not fear that smoke from them may be yours in the Fire? Spend, Bilāl, and fear no poverty from the Lord of the Throne.” (Bakkār is weak.)

Muʿāwiyah ibn Sallām narrated from Zayd that he heard Abū Sallām say: ʿAbd Allah Abū ʿĀmir al-Hawzanī told me, “I met Bilāl, the caller to prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, in Aleppo and asked him, ‘Tell me about the Prophet’s spending.’ He replied, ‘He possessed nothing of that nature himself; from the time Allah sent him until he passed away I was the one who managed such matters for him. Whenever a Muslim came to him and he saw the man without clothing, he would instruct me to go and borrow money, purchase a cloak or some goods, then clothe and feed him. One day a man from the idolaters met me and said, “Bilāl, I have ample means, so borrow from no one but me.” I did so. Then, one day, after performing ablution I rose to give the call to prayer, and there was that idolater with a band of merchants. When he saw me he said, “O Abyssinian!” I answered, “At your service.” He glared at me and spoke harshly, saying, “Do you know how close you are to the end of the month?” I replied, “It is near.” He said, “Only four nights remain; then I shall seize you for what you owe me. I did not give you what I gave out of honor for you, nor out of respect for your companion, but…"
