Al-Khaḍr ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar, Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd al-Salām, and Aḥmad ibn Abī al-Khayr wrote to inform us that ʿAbd al-Munʿim ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb ibn Kulayb had authorized them, saying: “ʿAlī ibn Bannān told us; Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad told us; Abū ʿAlī al-Ṣaffār related to us in the year 339 AH; al-Ḥasan ibn ʿArafah related to us: ʿAbbād ibn ʿAbbād al-Muhallabī narrated from Mujālid, from al-Shaʿbī, from Masrūq, from ʿĀʾishah, who said:
“A woman from the Anṣār once came to see me and noticed that the bedding of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was nothing but a folded cloak. She went off and sent me a mattress stuffed with wool. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then came in and asked, ‘What is this, ʿĀʾishah?’ I replied, ‘So-and-so saw your bedding and sent me this.’ He said, ‘Return it, ʿĀʾishah.’
“I did not return it, for I liked having it in my house. He repeated the command three times, and then said: ‘Return it, for by Allah, if I wished, Allah would make mountains of gold and silver flow with me.’”
Imām Aḥmad also recorded this in “al-Zuhd” through Ismāʿīl ibn Muḥammad, from ʿAbbād ibn ʿAbbād—who is trustworthy—through Mujālid, whose reliability is weak.
Muḥammad ibn Saʿd al-Kātib likewise transmitted it through Saʿīd ibn Sulaymān al-Wāsiṭī, from ʿAbbād ibn ʿAbbād.
Zāʾidah said: ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿUmayr narrated to us from Ribʿī ibn Ḥirāsh, from Umm Salamah, who said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ once entered my house with a distressed look on his face. I thought he might be in pain and asked, ‘O Messenger of Allah, why do I see you so troubled?’ He replied, ‘Because of the seven dinars that came to us yesterday; we spent the night without distributing them, and they are still tucked away in the bedding.’” This ḥadīth has a sound chain of transmission.
