77 – Abū Ḥayyān al-Tawḥīdī, ʿAlī b. Muḥammad b. al-ʿAbbās*
The misguided heretic (1), Abū Ḥayyān ʿAlī b. Muḥammad b. al-ʿAbbās al-Baghdādī, a Ṣūfī and the author of numerous literary and philosophical works; it is said that he was counted among the prominent Shāfiʿīs.
Ibn Bābī said in his book al-Kharīda wa-l-Farīda: “This Abū Ḥayyān was a liar, scant in religious commitment and piety, unrestrained in slander and openly proclaiming falsehood. He ventured into grave matters—impugning the Sacred Law and promoting taʿṭīl (the denial of the divine attributes). Our master, the vizier al-Ṣāḥib Kāfī al-Kifāya, uncovered some of the corrupt beliefs he was secretly nurturing and concealing, so he sought to apprehend him….”

Ibn Khallikan, discussing the nisba “al-Tawhidi,” writes: “I have not found any genealogist—neither al-Samʿani nor anyone else—who explains this designation. It is said, however, that his father sold ‘tawhid’ in Baghdad, a variety of Iraqi dates; on this basis some commentators on al-Mutanabbi’s Diwan interpret the poet’s line, ‘They sip from my mouth draughts that are sweeter therein than al-tawhid.’ Allah knows best.”
Al-Suyuti reports from Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Hajar that the name may refer to tawhid (monotheism), for the Muʿtazila describe themselves as “the people of justice and tawhid.”
See the author’s further remarks on this nisba in the main biography.
(1) Thus the present author characterises him; al-Subki, in the Tabaqat, calls him “the speculative theologian and Sufi.” Yaqut, in Mujam al-udaba, says: “He was devout, and people trusted his religion … he is a shaykh among the Sufis.” Compare p. 120, note (2).
