of al-Khaṭṭāb, are you not content that the Hereafter is ours while this world is theirs?”
I answered, “Indeed, O Messenger of Allah.” He said, “Then praise Allah.”
This was recorded by Muslim.
Maʿmar related from al-Zuhrī, from ʿUbayd Allah ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Abī Thawr, from Ibn ʿAbbās, from ʿUmar concerning this same incident: “I saw nothing in the house to attract the eye except three tanned hides. So I said, ‘Pray to Allah, O Messenger of Allah, to grant abundance to your community—for He has granted abundance to the Persians and the Byzantines, and they do not worship Allah.’
He sat upright and said, ‘Are you in doubt, O son of al-Khaṭṭāb? They are a people whose good things have been hastened for them in this worldly life.’
I replied, ‘I seek Allah’s forgiveness.’ (At that time he had sworn, out of the severity of his displeasure with his wives, not to enter upon them for a month, until Allah reproved him.)
Al-Bukhārī and Muslim both transmitted this version through al-Zuhrī.
I read this report before Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Muʿaddil in the year 94 AH. The learned Abū Muḥammad ibn Qudāmah informed you that Shahdah bint Abī Naṣr had related to them, saying: Abū Ghālib al-Bāqillānī told us; Abū ʿAlī ibn Shādhān told us; Abū Sahl ibn Ziyād told us; Ismāʿīl ibn Isḥāq narrated to us; Muslim ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to us; Mubārak ibn Faḍālah narrated to us from al-Ḥasan, from Anas, who said:
I entered upon the Prophet ﷺ while he was lying on a bed woven from leather thongs, with a cushion stuffed with palm-fiber beneath his head. A number of his Companions came in after me, among them ʿUmar. The Prophet straightened himself slightly, and ʿUmar saw the marks the thongs had left on the Prophet’s side, so he wept. The Prophet ﷺ asked, “What makes you weep?”
He replied, “Chosroes and Caesar revel as they will, yet you are on this bed!”
He said, “Are you not pleased that the world belongs to them and the Hereafter to us?”
ʿUmar answered, “Indeed …”
