He also kept company with Muḥammad ibn Dāwūd al-Duqqī (1) and other senior scholars. A large number of students from the Maghreb and from among the itinerant traditionists studied under him, and al-Ahwāzī praised the keenness of his memory. He passed away in 399 AH.
72 – Abū ʿAlī al-Baghdādī, al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī ibn Aḥmad*
The shaykh, erudite scholar, and reliable authority—the “musnad of Isfahān”—Abū ʿAlī al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī ibn Aḥmad ibn Sulaymān al-Baghdādī al-Shiṭranjī, a merchant who had settled in Isfahān.
His grandfather Sulaymān narrated from Hishām ibn ʿUbayd Allāh al-Rāzī, and his nearer forebear ʿAlī ibn Aḥmad narrated from Abū Ḥātim al-Rāzī.
Abū ʿAlī himself transmitted ḥadith from his father; al-Faḍl ibn al-Khaṣīb; Aḥmad ibn Mūsā ibn Isḥāq al-Khaṭmī (2); ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad, the nephew of Abū Zurʿah; al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī ibn Abī al-Ḥinnāʾ al-Mirdāsī al-Hamadhānī; Abū Asīd Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Asīd; Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Lunbānī; Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Nabīl al-Hamadhānī; Abū al-Aswad ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Fayḍ; Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn al-Hamadhānī; Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Suḥaymī; and several others.
Those who reported from him include Maḥmūd ibn Jaʿfar al-Kawsaj, Ibn Mandah Abū al-Qāsim, and a number of others.
The entire family was renowned for their devotion to ḥadith and isnād.
He died in Rajab 399 AH, having lived ninety-four years—may Allah have mercy on him.
