He was firmly reliable and held in high esteem.
Among those who narrated from him were Abū al-Qāsim ibn Manda, his brother ʿAbd al-Wahhāb, Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn ʿAlī al-Simsār, Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā al-Ṣaffār, and others.
He passed away in 399 AH.

The eminent astronomer, author of al-Zīj al-Ḥākimī (1), Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī—son of Egypt’s ḥadith scholar Abū Saʿīd ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, son of the jurist Aḥmad, son of the Shaykh of Islam Yūnus ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā al-Ṣadafī al-Miṣrī (2).
The community of astronomers readily acknowledges the excellence of this work.

(1) ʿIlm al-zīj (astronomical tables) is a branch of observational astronomy that calculates the motions of the planets—especially the seven “wandering stars”—their longitudes, risings, retrogradations, stations, heliacal settings and risings, visibility and occultation at any time or place. It also enables the prediction of solar and lunar eclipses, the regulation of the seasons, the determination of the qibla and of the prayer times. See Miftah al-Saʿada, 1/379-380. The most famous work in this field is the Zīj al-Hakimī, commonly called the Zīj of Ibn Yunus. Ibn Khallikan writes: “It is a large zīj, which I have seen in four volumes; the author expounded both theory and practice at length and showed exceptional accuracy. Among the numerous zījes, I have seen none larger.” He notes that the Fatimid ruler al-ʿAzīz Abū al-Hakim commissioned the work. Cf. (2) The nisba al-Sadafi (with a short vowel on the dāl) refers to the tribe of al-Sadaf, a Himyarite clan that later settled in Egypt.

(١) علم الزيج: هو أحد فروع علم الهيئة، يتعرف منه مقادير حركات الكواكب سيما السبعة السيارة وتقويم حركاتها وإخراج الطوالع وغير ذلك، وبه يعرف موضع كل واحد من
الكواكب - سيما السبعة - بالنسبة إلى فلكها وإلى فلك البروج، وانتقالاتها ورجوعها واستقامتها وتشريقها وتغريبها وظهورها وخفاؤها في كل زمان ومكان، وبه يعرف كسوف الشمس وخسوف القمر وما يجري هذا المجرى، وبه يستخرج تقويم فصول السنة وسمت القبلة وأوقات الصلاة.

وكتاب " الزيج الحاكمي " المعروف بزيج ابن يونس قال فيه ابن خلكان: وهو زيج كبير، رأيته في أربع مجلدات بسط القول والعمل فيه، وما أقصر في تحريره، ولم أر في الازياج على كثرتها أطول منه، وذكر أن الذي أمره بعمله وابتدأه له العزيز أبو الحاكم صاحب مصر.
