Aḥmad ibn Fāris the philologist informed us; ʿAlī ibn Abī Khālid in Qazvīn narrated to us; al-Dabarī narrated to us, from ʿAbd al-Razzāq, from al-Thawrī, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Sāʾib, from Zādhān, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd, who said:
The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said, “Indeed, Allah has angels who roam the earth; they convey to me the greetings of peace offered by my ummah.” (1)
Among the poetry of Ibn Fāris:
“May refreshing rain water Hamadhān—this alone I will say,
even while a fire blazes deep within my breast.
And why should I not pour forth prayer for a town
through which I forgot what once I knew?
I have forgotten every favor I bestowed—save that
I am still in debt and no dirham lies within my house.” (2)
He also said:
“If the scorching heat of summer torments you,
the dryness (3) of autumn and the chill of winter,
while the charm of springtime distracts you,
then tell me—when will you ever pursue knowledge?” (4)
