58 – al-Kalābādhī, Abū Naṣr Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn
The imam, the unrivalled ḥadīth-master: Abū Naṣr Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn ibn al-Ḥasan (1) ibn ʿAlī ibn Rustum, a native of Bukhara, better known as al-Kalābādhī.
Kalābādh is a quarter of Bukhara.
He was born in 323 AH (2).
He heard ḥadīths from al-Haytham ibn Kulayb al-Shāshī, ʿAlī ibn Muḥtāj, Abū Jaʿfar Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad al-Baghdādī the mule-driver, ʿAbd al-Muʾmin ibn Khalaf al-Nasafī, Muḥammad ibn Maḥmūd ibn ʿAnbar, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn Yaʿqūb al-Ḥārithī, and others of their generation.
Among those who narrated from him were al-Dāraqutnī—despite his seniority, as noted in the book al-Mudabbaj (3)—and al-Ḥākim,
= The prose line the author cited before the couplet is in fact taken from this very poem; its exact wording is: “fata mata bayna-l-taʿni wa-l-darbi mitatan * taqumu maqama-n-nasri idha fatahu-n-nasru” – “A youth who met his death amid thrusts and blows, a death that stands in place of victory when victory eludes him.” The poem is preserved in his Diwan, vol. 4, pp. 79 and 85.

(1) The words placed between brackets are taken from al-Ansab and Tarikh Baghdad. Ibn Khallikan, however, lists “al-Hasan” before “al-Husayn.”
(2) Al-Ansab, 10/507, states that he was born in 360 AH; this is a mistake. See Tadhkirat al-Huffaz, 3/1027.
(3) “Mudabbaj” is a subtype of hadith transmission in which two contemporaries (aqran) of comparable age or narrative rank relate from each other. If both narrate from one another, the transmission is called mudabbaj, as with Abu Hurayra and ʿAʾisha, al-Zuhri and ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAziz, or Malik and al-Awzaʿi. If only one of the pair narrates from the other, it is not termed mudabbaj, e.g., Sulayman al-Taymi reporting from Misʿar while Misʿar is not known to have reported from him. See al-Suyuti’s Alfiyya, commentary of Ahmad Shakir, p. 239.
