56 – al-Babbaghāʾ, Abū al-Faraj ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn Naṣr ibn Muḥammad *
The foremost poet of his era and an accomplished man of letters. He is Abū al-Faraj ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn Naṣr ibn Muḥammad al-Makhzūmī, originally from Naṣībīn.
He left behind a complete dīwān and a series of panegyrics in praise of Sayf al-Dawla (1).
He travelled through many regions, lauding the leading dignitaries (2).
He was dubbed “al-Babbaghāʾ” because of his eloquence.
Others said it was due to a slight lisp in his speech (3).
He died in Shaʿbān, in the year 398 AH (4).

The nisba “al-Babbaga” is vocalised in the autograph with a kasra on the first b and a geminated, fathated second b. Al-Samʿani, in Al-Ansab, reads it with a fatha on the first b and a quiescent second; Ibn al-Athir in Al-Lubab, al-Fayumi in Al-Misbah al-munir, and the author of Al-Qamus adopt the same reading and add that the second b may also be doubled. Ibn Khallikan, in Wafayat al-aʿyan, opts for the form with a fatha on the first b and a doubled second b. The entry is omitted by al-Jawhari and the author of Lisan al-ʿArab.

(4) The author quotes in Tarikh al-Islam the following lines of his poetry:
“O you whose form (khulq) and character (khuluq) are alike, / Every eye travels only toward you.
The ruddiness of my tears is stolen from your cheeks, / My emaciation is filched from your eyelids.
No breath is left with which to complain of your love; / Only he who still has breath can complain.”
He also says:
“Is it not among the marvels that, though I left him, / I survived after our separation?
O you who rivals the full moon at its perfection, / Have mercy on a youth who resembles it at its waning.”
