55 – al-Baḥīrī, Abū ʿAmr Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad *
Imām, ḥadith master, critic, and trusted authority. He is Abū ʿAmr Muḥammad, son of Shaykh Abū al-Ḥusayn Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad ibn Baḥīr ibn Nūḥ al-Baḥīrī, a native of Nīshāpūr and an examiner of narrators.
He heard ḥadith from his father, from Yaḥyā ibn Manṣūr the judge, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad al-Kaʿbī, Muḥammad ibn al-Muʾammal ibn al-Ḥasan, Abū Bakr al-Qaṭīʿī, and their contemporaries.
Those who transmitted from him include Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥākim, his son Abū ʿUthmān Saʿīd ibn Muḥammad al-Baḥīrī, and others.
He has forty ḥadiths that we have heard, and another forty in my possession that have not yet reached us.
Among the narrators who reported from him are Abū al-ʿAlāʾ Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī al-Wāsiṭī and Muḥammad ibn Shuʿayb al-Ruyānī.
Al-Ḥākim said: “He was one of the distinguished preservers of ḥadith, outstanding in scholarly review sessions.”
He passed away in Shaʿbān, d. 396 AH, at the age of sixty-three (1).
His son Abū ʿUthmān (2) will be mentioned later along with his peers.
