33 – Ibn Wakīʿ, al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī ibn Aḥmad al-Ḍabbī

The scholar, master orator, and poet Abū Muḥammad al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī ibn Aḥmad, son of the judge Muḥammad ibn Khalaf—better known as Ibn Wakīʿ al-Ḍabbī, originally from Baghdad and later settled in Tinnīs—was counted among the foremost poets of his age.

He composed a Dīwān (1) and was surnamed “al-ʿĀṭis” (“the Sneezer”). He is the author of the verses:

“I exulted over my heart—may Allah never lighten (2) its burden!
How often I rebuked it for its passion, but it replied: ‘There is no escaping it.’ (3)”

He died in Jumādā al-Ūlā of the year 393 AH in Tinnīs, and a domed structure was erected over his grave.

Ibn Khallikan notes: “Wakiʿ is the laqab of his grandfather, the qadi Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Khalaf.” Hence the subject of this entry became known as “Ibn Wakiʿ” in reference to that grandfather, who is the author of Akhbar al-Qudat and other works. The compiler of Hadiyyat al-ʿArifin mistakenly ascribed those juridical works of Wakiʿ the grandfather to the present poet-grandson. (1) He also wrote al-Munsif, in which he exposes Abu al-Tayyib al-Mutanabbi’s borrowings and elucidates the problematic passages in his poetry. The book was edited by Dr. Muhammad Ridwan al-Dayya and published by Dar Qutaiba, Damascus, 1982. A manuscript of one of his poems is preserved in Berlin (Ms. 7589). Al-Nuwayri, Nihayat al-Arab, 1/179-183, cites several of his rajaz poems on the four seasons. (2) Wafayat al-Aʿyan omits the word “Faraj.” (3) The two verses are quoted in Wafayat al-Aʿyan, 2/105. In Yatimat al-Dahr Thaʿalibi reproduces his muzdawaja al-murabbaʿa, a poem in which each set of four hemistichs ends with the same rhyme; it opens with: “Risala min kalifin ʿamid / hayatuhu fi qabdat al-sudud / balaghahu al-shawq mada al-majhud / ma fawqa ma yalqahu min mazid.” For the range of his poetry, see Yatimat al-Dahr.
