Ibn al-Sammāk informed us; Abū Yaʿlā al-Khalīlī informed us; ʿAlī ibn ʿUmar the jurist related to us; Ibn Abī Ḥātim said: I heard my father say:
“I entered Qazwīn in the year 23 while Dāwūd al-ʿUqaylī—meaning the son of Ibrāhīm—was its judge. We visited him, and he handed us a quire containing the Musnad of Abū Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him. The first ḥadith in it read: ‘Shuʿbah narrated to us, from Abū al-Tayyāḥ, from al-Mughīrah ibn Subayʿ, about the Antichrist’s emergence from Khurāsān.’
I said, ‘This is not one of Shuʿbah’s reports; it belongs to Saʿīd ibn Abī ʿArūbah (1).’ I also told my uncle, ‘I will not write from him unless he retracts this.’ My uncle replied, ‘I would be embarrassed to say that to him.’
So I left and did not hear anything from him.”
