He died in the town of al-Nīl (1) in Jumādā al-Ākhirah of the year 391 AH, having reached an advanced age.
30 – al-Rāzī, Abū al-Hasan ʿAlī ibn ʿUmar ibn al-ʿAbbās
The imam, the erudite scholar, the senior authority of the Shāfiʿī school: Abū al-Hasan ʿAlī ibn ʿUmar ibn al-ʿAbbās al-Rāzī, the jurist.
He transmitted ḥadith from Ibn Abī Ḥātim—copiously so—and from Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn Qārin ibn al-ʿAbbās, Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Muʿāwiyah al-Kāghadī, and Aḥmad ibn Khālid ibn Muṣʿab al-Ḥazūrī (2). Later on he travelled and received narrations from al-Najjād and Ibn al-Sammāk.
Al-Khalīlī reports many traditions from him and says: “He was a scholar who possessed a share of every branch of knowledge; in jurisprudence he was an imam, and he lived to nearly one hundred years.”
I heard ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad al-Ḥāfiẓ say: “None of al-Shāfiʿī’s companions lived longer than this man. He was learned in fatwās and dialectical reasoning.”
I (the author) add: He was unique in narrating from Ibn Muṣʿab and others, and he remained alive until about the year 400 AH.
