the judge Abū Zurʿah, Rūḥ ibn Muḥammad al-Sunnī, informed us; Abū Sahl Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Jawāliqī informed us; Abū Bakr Aḥmad ibn Mudrik ibn Zanjalah dictated to us; ʿAbd al-Aʿlā ibn Ḥammād narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Jabbār ibn al-Ward informed us:
“I heard Ibn Abī Mulaykah say, ‘I heard ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Abī Yazīd say:
Ibn ʿAbbās said to me, The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “No single day is superior to another for fasting except the month of Ramadan and the day of ʿĀshūrāʾ.”(1)’”
This is a singular hadith and contains an irregular element. Ibn al-Ward is reliable,(2) and he is the brother of Wuhaib the ascetic.
21 – al-Zakī, Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Yaʿqūb al-Naysābūrī, the man of letters.(3)
(1) It was also cited by Abu Sahl al-Jawaliqi in Ahadith Ibn al-Daris 2/189, by al-Tahawi in Sharh Maʿani al-Athar 1/337, and by al-Tabarani in al-Kabir nos. 11252–11253. Al-Dhahabi ruled the report munkar (denounced); the reason will be explained in the next comment.
(2) Al-Bukhari said about this narrator: “He disagrees in some of his traditions,” and Ibn Hibban wrote: “He makes mistakes and becomes confused.” In this hadith he erred by treating it as Prophetic, whereas several trustworthy transmitters relate it from Abd Allah ibn Abi Yazid, on the authority of Ibn Abbas, as Ibn Abbas’s own statement: “I never saw the Prophet give special attention to fasting a day, preferring it over others, except this day—the day of ʿAshura—and this month, meaning Ramadan.” It is recorded by al-Bukhari (no. 2006, at the end of the Book of Fasting), Muslim (no. 1132), Ahmad (nos. 1938, 2856, 3475), al-Tahawi in Sharh Maʿani al-Athar 1/337, and al-Tabarani in al-Kabir nos. 11252, 11254–11257, through various chains from Ubayd Allah. Ibn Hajar comments in Fath al-Bari 4/249: this implies that the day of ʿAshura is the best day to fast after Ramadan. Yet Ibn Abbas attributed that verdict to his own knowledge, so it does not negate what others may know. Muslim also transmits, from Abu Qatadah, the Prophetic statement: “Fasting on the day of ʿAshura expiates one year, and fasting on the day of ʿArafah expiates two years,” which outwardly indicates that fasting on ʿArafah is superior to fasting on ʿAshura.
(*) Tarikh al-Islam 4/90/1, where he is called “al-Muzakki, shaykh al-tazkiyah.” Ibn al-Athir notes in al-Lubab, under the entry al-Muzakki, that this title is used for the person who verifies witnesses, investigates their standing, and is recognised by the judge; a large family in Nishapur, several of them scholars, became famous for it. Hence the correct nisba is al-Muzakki, not al-Zakki as printed in the main text.
(3) The author states in the Tarikh that he was a traditionist, grammarian and man of letters, and that he led the congregation in the tarawih prayer for sixty-three …
