—so that I could bring together all those who bear the kunya Abū Zurʿah in one section.

Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn al-Salm (1) informed us; al-Hasan ibn Ahmad al-Awaqi (2) informed us; Abū Tāhir al-Silafī informed us; Muhammad ibn Muhammad al-Madanī informed us; Abū Bakr Ahmad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān narrated to us; Abū Zurʿah Muhammad ibn Ibrāhīm at Istarabad informed us; Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Sarrāj reported:
“I said to Qutaybah, ‘Did Mālik relate to you, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Congregational prayer surpasses the prayer of an individual by twenty-seven degrees”?’ He acknowledged it and said, ‘Yes.’” (3)

(1) In his catalogue of teachers (Mashaykhah, fol. 151) the author writes: “Muhammad b. Muhammad b. Salim b. Yusuf b. Saʿid b. al-Silm, the eminent scholar-judge, Jamal al-Din, Abu al-Makaram, son of the unrivalled judge Najm al-Din, grandson of the Chief Judge Shams al-Din Salim al-Qurashi al-Nabulusi al-Shafiʿi, qadi of Jerusalem and Nablus. He narrated to us from Abu ʿAli al-Awqi. He was born in 620 AH/1223-24 CE in Nablus and died there in Rabiʿ al-Awwal 694 AH/1294-95 CE.” (2) The nisba “Awqi” comes from the place-name “Awh” (both vowels open, ending with a h). Yaqut states in Muʿjam al-Buldan, 1/283: “Awh is a village between Zanjan and Hamadan. From it was the pious ascetic Abu ʿAli al-Hasan b. Ahmad b. Yusuf al-Awqi; I met him in Jerusalem, detached from the world, devoted to Quran recitation while facing the qibla of al-Masjid al-Aqsa. I heard a fascicle from him, wrote it down, and asked about his origin. He said, ‘I come from a town called Awh.’ The hadith scholar al-Salafi told me, ‘You should add a qaf for the nisba’; hence he was called al-Awqi.” ʿAbd al-Rahman al-Muʿallimi al-Yamani notes on this remark (al-Ansab, 1/388): “It is not an addition but the replacement of the final silent h in a foreign word with a qaf, as found in similar cases.” (3) The hadith is in the Muwattaʾ, 1/129 (Book of Congregational Prayer, chapter on the merit of praying in congregation). Through Malik it is also reported by Ahmad, 2/112; al-Bukhari, 2/30 (Book of Adhan, chapter on the merit of congregational prayer); and al-Nasaʾi, 2/103. It further appears in al-Tirmidhi, no. 215; Ibn Majah, no. 789; and Ahmad, 2/102 via the chain Ubayd Allah b. ʿUmar – Nafiʿ – Ibn ʿUmar. (*) Tarikh Jurjan, p. 470; Tadhkirat al-Huffaz, 3/1001.
