Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

I once examined a sizable—though incomplete—collection of Sunan that contained a number of singular reports; people said that it was his own compilation.

Abu al-Husayn (1) al-Yunini reported to us; Jaʿfar al-Hamdani reported to us; al-Silafi reported to us; al-Muʿammar ibn Muhammad al-Habbal in Kufah reported to us; Ahmad ibn ʿAli al-Jaʿfari narrated to us; Abu Zurʿah Ahmad ibn al-Husayn narrated to us; Hamid ibn Hammad of Nisibin narrated to us; Ishaq ibn Sayyar narrated to us; Muhammad ibn ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Jabir narrated to us; and Abu al-Fadl narrated:

Hisham ibn ʿUrwah said to me, “Do you drink nabidh (fermented date beverage)?”
I replied, “Yes.”

(1) The manuscript reads “Abu al-Hasan,” which is incorrect. The correct name, as given in the author’s Mishyakha, fol. 99, is: ʿAli ibn Muhammad ibn al-Husayn ibn Ahmad ibn ʿAbd Allah … the imam, hadith master, jurist, peerless authority, remnant of the early generations, Sharf al-Din, Abu al-Husayn son of the godly jurist Abu ʿAbd Allah, al-Yunini al-Hanbali—our teacher and benefactor. He was born in Rajab 621 AH (July–August 1224 CE) and heard hadith in person from al-Bahaʾ ʿAbd al-Rahman, Ibn al-Sabah, Ibn al-Zubaydi, Ibn al-Latti, Mukrim, ʿAbd al-Wahid ibn Abi al-Mada, Ibn Rawaj, and many others in Egypt and Syria. He copied Sahih al-Bukhari with his own hand, carefully collated it, and told me he compared it within a single year and listened to its recitation eleven times. He transmitted extensively and was a dignified, radiant shaykh—pleasant in conversation, richly informative, widely versed in the sciences, excellent in dissemination, and admirably humble. I studied under him at Baalbek and Damascus. On the first of Ramadan 701 AH (30 April 1302 CE) he entered the Baalbek library; a deranged man struck him in the head with a knife. He lingered a few days and then died—may Allah have mercy on him. The nisba “Yunini” refers to the village Yunin near Baalbek, pronounced with ḍamma on the y and kasra on the first n. Yaqut, in Muʿjam al-Buldan, and al-Fayruzabadi, in al-Qamus, write it “Yunan” with fatḥa on the first n, while al-Zabidi, in Taj al-ʿArus, notes that both forms exist, the common one being Yunin. I add: The copy of Sahih al-Bukhari prepared by Abu al-Husayn al-Yunini, known as the Yuniniyya, is the most reliable textual basis for the book. Imam al-Qastallani made it his chief source when establishing and vocalising the text word by word; this is the distinctive merit of his commentary Irshad al-Sari. The Ottoman imperial edition ordered by Sultan ʿAbd al-Hamid, printed at the Amiriya Press in Cairo (1311–1313 AH), was based on the Yuniniyya; it was re-issued on the same model in 1314 AH. The Cairo edition printed by Mustafa al-Babi al-Halabi Press in 1378 AH/1958 CE likewise followed the imperial text.
