Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Volume Seventeen

1 – The ruler of Mosul, Ḥusām al-Dawlah Muqallid ibn al-Musayyab al-ʿUqaylī, son of Rāfiʿ ibn al-Muqallid al-ʿUqaylī.

His brother, Abū al-Zawwād (1) Muḥammad ibn al-Musayyab, overpowered Mosul in 380 AH, married his daughter to the son (2) of ʿAḍud al-Dawlah, and died in 387 AH, whereupon Muqallid assumed rule.

He was intelligent, politically astute, and experienced; his dominions expanded, robes of investiture were sent to him by al-Qādir bi-Allah (3), and he maintained thousands in his employ.

(*) Al-Kamil by Ibn al-Athir 9/125–126, 133–135, 164; Wafayat al-Ayan 5/260–269; al-Ibar 3/51; Duwal al-Islam 1/236; Tarikh al-Islam 4/87/2; Tarikh Ibn Khaldun 4/255–257; al-Nujum al-Zahira 4/203; Shadharat al-Dhahab 3/138; Munyat al-Udaba fi Tarikh al-Mawsil al-Hadba, 46–47. (1) This is the reading of the base manuscript. Tarikh al-Islam and al-Kamil have al-dhawad with the emphatic dhad, whereas Wafayat al-Ayan reads al-dawad with the simple dal. Its editor notes that another copy gives the emphatic letter, and a different one has al-zawad, which is also the form found in our manuscript. (2) That is Baha al-Dawla Abu Nasr Ahmad ibn ‘Adud al-Dawla; his biography will appear later in this volume under no. 106. (3) The reference is to the Abbasid caliph Abu al-Abbas Ahmad ibn the amir Ishaq ibn al-Muqtadir Ja‘far ibn al-Mu‘tadid al-Baghdadi (d. 422/1031); his life was treated in volume fifteen.
