from Ruqayyah, from Jaʿfar ibn Iyās, from Ḥabīb—meaning Ibn Sālim—from al-Nuʿmān ibn Bashīr, who said, “I know better than anyone the appointed time of this prayer, the last evening prayer (the night prayer, ʿishāʾ). The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to perform it when the moon had set on its third night.” (1)
405 Ibn Zunbur — Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar ibn ʿAlī al-Baghdādī*
The shaykh and musnid, Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar ibn ʿAlī ibn Khalaf ibn Zunbur al-Baghdādī, the bookseller, one of the last of the elders.
He transmitted from: Abū al-Qāsim al-Baghawī, Abū Bakr ibn Abī Dāwūd, Yaḥyā ibn Ṣāʿid, ʿUmar al-Darbī, and others.
Those who narrated from him include: Abū al-Qāsim al-Azharī, Abū Muḥammad al-Khallāl, and a group whose final member was Abū Naṣr al-Zaynabī.
Al-Azharī said, “He is weak in what he relates from al-Baghawī, but his hearing from al-Darbī is sound.”
(1) Its chain of transmission is sound. Al-Nasai (1/264) also reports it through Muhammad b. Qudama with this same isnad; likewise al-Tirmidhi (165), Abu Dawud (419), al-Darimi (1/275), Ahmad (4/274), al-Nasai again (1/264), al-Hakim (1/194–195), and al-Bayhaqi (1/448–449), all via Abu Awana, from Abu Bishr Jaʿfar b. Abi Wahshiyya, from Bashir b. Thabit, from Habib b. Salim, from al-Numan b. Bashir.
Ahmad (4/270), al-Tayalisi (797), and al-Hakim (1/194) transmit it instead through Hishim, from Abu Bishr, from Habib b. Salim, omitting Bashir b. Thabit. Al-Hakim notes: “Raqaba b. Musqila corroborates Hishim in narrating it from Abu Bishr, from Habib b. Salim; this isnad is sound.” Shuʿba and Abu Awana, however, include Bashir b. Thabit and relate it as: from Abu Bishr, from Bashir b. Thabit, from Habib b. Salim.
