He narrated from: his father; Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Aws; Muḥammad ibn al-Marrār ibn Ḥammūyah; ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥasan ibn Saʿd al-Bazzāz; Aḥmad ibn al-Ḥasan ibn ʿIzūn; Qāsim ibn Ibrāhīm; Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Nubayl; al-Qāsim ibn Abī Ṣāliḥ; ʿAbd al-Salām ibn ʿAbdīl; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Ḥātim al-Rāzī; ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad ibn Mahrūyah al-Qazwīnī, and many others.
He collected material and authored works.
Those who transmitted from him include: Ṭāhir ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Māhilah; Ḥamd al-Zajjāj; Aḥmad ibn Zanjawayh al-ʿUmarī; the imam Ṭāhir ibn Aḥmad; Abū al-Fatḥ ibn Abī al-Fawāris; Aḥmad ibn al-Ḥusayn ibn Zambil al-Nahāwandī, and others.
Al-Ḥāfiẓ Shīrawayh al-Daylamī said, “He was a pillar of hadith: reliable, a hadith master, devout, scrupulous, and truthful—fearing no reproach in the cause of Allah.”
He left a large number of writings.
He was born in 303 AH and died with eight days remaining in Shaʿbān 384 AH. Supplications are answered at his grave!
Abū Bakr ibn Lāl led his funeral prayer, and it has reached us that he said, “We used to abandon sins out of fear of Allah, and two-thirds of that out of modesty before this shaykh.”
– Abū al-Ḥusayn al-Bazzāz –
As for his father—the exemplary imam and hadith scholar Abū al-Ḥusayn al-Bazzāz—he travelled in search of knowledge and narrated from Ḥamzah ibn Muḥammad al-Kātib, Muḥammad ibn Ḥibbān al-Bāhilī, Ḥāmid ibn Shuʿayb, and their peers.
