al-Dharib al-Ladhqī, ʿAbd al-Jabbār al-Tarsūsī, Abū al-ʿAbbās ibn Nafīs, and others.
I have given his biography in full in Tabaqāt al-Qurrāʾ, and I would have liked him to be reliable, for my chain through him is exceptionally high.
Al-Ṣūrī said: Abū al-Qāsim al-ʿUnnābī told me, “I was with Abū Aḥmad the Qurʾān-reciter when he narrated to us from al-Wakīʿī. Later I met ʿAbd al-Ghanī and informed him; he was greatly astonished and said, ‘Ask him when he heard from him.’ He replied, ‘In Mecca in the year 300.’ I reported this to ʿAbd al-Ghanī, who said, ‘Abū al-ʿAlāʾ died here at the very beginning of the year 300!’ Thereupon he stopped greeting him and said, ‘I will not greet someone who lies in ḥadīth.’
In the book al-ʿUnwān (1) it is stated that Abū Aḥmad read to Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā al-Kisāʾī; this is an error, for either Ibn Shanabūdh or Ibn Mujāhid is missing between them.
Yahyā ibn al-Ṭaḥḥān said: Abū Aḥmad claimed that he narrated from Ibn al-Muʿtazz.
I say: Even without that claim the narrator’s reports are to be discarded.
He died in Muḥarram, 386 AH.
