Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

in Egypt under Kāfūr.

He transmitted ḥadīths from Abū Ḥāmid Muḥammad ibn Hārūn al-Ḥaḍramī; al-Ḥasan ibn Muḥammad al-Dārakī al-Isfahānī; Abū Yaʿlā Muḥammad ibn Zuhayr al-Uballī; Muḥammad ibn Ḥamzah ibn ʿUmārah al-Isfahānī; Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar al-Kharrāʾiṭī; Muḥammad ibn Saʿīd al-Ḥimṣī; and several others.

Al-Khaṭīb said: He used to claim that he had attended a session of Abū al-Qāsim al-Baghawī, and would add, “Whoever brings it to me, I will enrich him.”

He dictated ḥadīths in Egypt, and it was because of him that al-Dāraqutnī travelled there. Ibn Ḥinzabah wished to compile a Musnad, so al-Dāraqutnī went to Egypt, stayed with him for a time, and received from him a considerable sum of money. (1)

Those who narrated from him include al-Dāraqutnī, the ḥāfiẓ Abū Muḥammad ʿAbd al-Ghanī al-Miṣrī, and a number of others.

It is difficult for us to obtain his ḥadīths, because—at the very time when transmission was possible—his learning was in little demand in Egypt on account of the Ismāʿīlī government.

It was said that he was the one who corresponded with them and emboldened them to come and take Egypt, then regretted it.

Al-Silafī said: Ibn Ḥinzabah was one of the trustworthy ḥuffāẓ who took pride in keeping company with the people of ḥadīth. Despite his eminence and high office, he would narrate and dictate ḥadīths in Egypt while serving as vizier, preferring nothing over knowledge and the fellowship of its seekers. I possess some of his dictations and some of his comments on ḥadīth—material that attests to the sharpness of his understanding and the breadth of his learning.

Ḥamzah ibn Muḥammad al-Kinānī, the ḥāfiẓ, despite his seniority, also transmitted from him.
