Abu ʿAbd Allah al-Hakim said, “His prayers were answered. The notebooks of his audition sessions are sound, penned by his father, and go back to Abu al-ʿAbbas al-Sarraj and his contemporaries. He outlived everyone of his generation in the loftiness of his chains of transmission.”
I say: Those who related from him include al-Hakim, ʿAbd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn Haskawayh, Abu al-Qasim al-Qushayri, Ahmad ibn ʿAbd al-Rahim al-Ismaʿili, al-Sayyid ʿAli ibn Muhammad ibn Muhammad al-Husayni, Abu al-Muzaffar Muhammad ibn Ismaʿil al-Shujaʿi, Abu Nasr al-Husayn ibn Ahmad al-Jarimini the judge, al-Fadl ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Muhibb, Saʿid ibn Abi Saʿid al-ʿAyyar, ʿAʾishah bint Muhammad al-Bastami, and many others besides them.
A number of his elevated narrations have reached us.
Al-Hakim further said, “He died in Rabiʿ al-Awwal of the year 395 AH, at the age of ninety-three.”
In that same year there also passed away: Abu ʿAli al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn Darastawayh al-Dimashqi, one of the reliable students of Muhammad ibn Khuraym; the muhaddith Abu ʿUthman Saʿid ibn Nasr al-Qurtubi; the jurist-traditionist Abu Muhammad ʿAbd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn Asad al-Juhayni al-Tulaytali; and the imam Abu al-Qasim ʿAbd al-Warith ibn Sufyan al-Qurtubi—these three being among the senior teachers of Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr. Also in that year died the musnid Abu al-Hasan Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn al-ʿAbbas al-Ikhmimi in Egypt; Abu Nasr Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Malāhimi; the leading hafiz of the day, Abu ʿAbd Allah ibn Mandah; Abu al-Husayn Ahmad ibn Faris al-Razi, the lexicographer; and Ahmad ibn al-Qasim ibn ʿAbd al-Rahman al-Taharti, the cloth-merchant of Córdoba.
