339 – al-Kisāʾī, Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm ibn Yaḥyā *
The shaykh and accomplished grammarian, Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm ibn Yaḥyā al-Naysābūrī, known as al-Kisāʾī.
A number of pupils completed their training in Arabic under him. He transmitted Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim from Ibn Sufyān, and it was in turn narrated from him by Abū Masʿūd Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Bajalī—a weak isnād.
Al-Ḥākim said, “He reported the Ṣaḥīḥ from a new copy written in his own hand. I objected, and he reproached me, so I said, ‘If only you would bring out your original copy and relate the ḥadith to me exactly as it is?’”
He replied, “My father took me to the session of Ibn Sufyān the jurist to hear this book, but I could not locate my certificate of audition. Abū Aḥmad al-Julūdī said to me, ‘I used to see your father stand you up in the gathering so you could listen, while you would fall asleep because you were still a child. Copy the Ṣaḥīḥ from my manuscript and you will benefit from it.’” (1)
He passed away in 385 AH, on the eve of Eid al-Aḍḥā.
