The shaykh, musnid, and ḥadith scholar: Abū al-Qāsim ʿAbd Allah ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Ibrāhīm al-Baghdadi, known as Ibn al-Thallāj “the witness,” originally from Ḥulwān.
He was born in 307 AH.
He narrated from al-Baghawī, Abū Bakr ibn Abī Dāwūd, Yaḥyā ibn Ṣāʿid, and many others after them, and he was extremely prolific.
Those who narrated from him include Abū ʿAbd Allah al-Ṣaymarī, Abū al-ʿAlāʾ Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī al-Wāsiṭī, Abū al-Qāsim al-Tanūkhī, and others.
He is not reliable.
Al-Tanūkhī related: “He told me, ‘None of my forefathers ever sold ice. My grandfather was a man of means who used to stockpile (1) large amounts of it. When one of the caliphs passed through Ḥulwān, he asked for ice but found it only with my grandfather, who thereby won his favor. The caliph said, “Fetch ʿAbd Allah the Iceman (al-Thallāj),” and the nickname stuck (2).’”
ʿUbayd Allah al-Azharī said: “Ibn al-Thallāj used to fabricate hadith (3).”
Al-Dāraquṭnī remarked: “Do not concern yourself with him; he forges hadith texts and their isnāds (4).”
