al-Sijzī, the Ḥanafī, preacher, and judge of Samarqand.
He studied under Abū al-Qāsim al-Baghawī, Yaḥyā ibn Ṣāʿid, the Imām of the Imams Ibn Khuzaymah, Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Sarrāj, Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm al-Daybulī al-Makkī, Ibn Jawṣā, and many others.
Those who narrated from him include al-Ḥākim, Abū Yaʿqūb Isḥāq al-Qarrāb, ʿAbd al-Wahhāb ibn Muḥammad al-Khaṭṭābī, Jaʿfar al-Mustaghfirī, Abū Dharr al-Harawī, and Muḥallam ibn Ismāʿīl al-Ḍabbī al-Harawī.
A hadith of his has reached me with an elevated chain, and he was counted among the most effective people in exhortation and reminder.
Birth: 289 AH.
Death: Farghānah, 378 AH.
Al-Ḥākim said, “He was the shaykh of the Ahl al-Raʾy (the scholars of reasoned opinion) in his era, and one of the most eloquent speakers in preaching.”
From his poetry (1):
I shall take Nuʿmān as my model in jurisprudence,
And Sufyān as the master in conveying ḥadith;
And, in shunning what does not concern my creed (2),
I shall follow Yaʿqūb al-ʿAlāʾ and Muḥammad.
