I also remark: his Tafsīr is still preserved in the city of Wāsiṭ today.

Al-Dāwūdī said: “I once saw Ibn Shāhīn meet with al-Dāraquṭnī, yet he did not utter a single word.”

I comment: The man was not outstanding in the subtleties of the craft, but he was a tireless transmitter of Islam—may Allah have mercy on him.

Al-ʿAtīqī stated: He died in Dhu’l-Ḥijjah of the year 385 AH.

I add: He lived eighty-nine years, surviving al-Dāraquṭnī by only a few days, and earlier that same year the ascetic exemplar and traditionist Abū’l-Fath Yūsuf ibn ʿUmar al-Qawwās had already passed away.

In that year there also died: the Persian vizier al-Ṣāḥib Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAbbād al-Ṭālaqānī; the Egyptian traditionist Abū Bakr Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Ismāʿīl al-Muhandis; the foremost poet of his time Abū’l-Ḥasan Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Sukkara al-ʿAbbāsī al-Baghdādī; and the judge ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn al-Adhanī, companion of Ibn Fīl.

Musallam ibn Muḥammad al-Kātib informed us; Abū’l-Yaman al-Kindī informed us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad informed us; Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī al-ʿAbbāsī communicated the wording to us; ʿUmar ibn Aḥmad, the ḥāfiẓ, narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad ibn Sulaymān narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿImrān al-ʿĀbidī narrated to us; al-Darāwardī—from Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr, from Abū Salamah, from Abū Hurayrah—reported that:

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “I have been commanded to fight the people until they declare, ‘There is no deity but Allah.’ When they make that declaration, their lives and property are protected from me except where the law entitles otherwise, and their reckoning is with Allah.” (1)
