Messenger of Allah, “Surah Hūd and its sister chapters (1) have turned my hair grey.”
“What in it caused your hair to grey?” he asked.
I replied, “His words: ‘So remain steadfast as you have been commanded.’”
310 – Ibn Ḥaskawayh, Aḥmad ibn Ḥusayn al-Naysābūrī
The shaykh, Abū Naṣr Aḥmad ibn Ḥusayn ibn Muḥammad ibn Ḥammūyah ibn Ḥaskawayh al-Naysābūrī, the bookseller and muʾadhdhin.
He heard ḥadith from Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Māsarjisī, Ibn Khuzaymah, al-Sarrāj, and a number of others.
Narrated from him were al-Ḥākim and Abū Saʿd al-Kanjarūdhī.
He passed away in Shaʿbān, 381 AH.
311 – Ibn Nāqib, Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn Ḥamm al-Bukhārī
The shaykh, Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn Ḥamm ibn Nāqib al-Bukhārī, the coppersmith.
He was among those who transmitted the Ṣaḥīḥ of al-Bukhārī from Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Firabrī.
He also heard ḥadith from al-Ḥusayn ibn Ismāʿīl al-Fārisī and Muḥammad ibn Saʿīd.
(1) A sound hadith: Sunan al-Tirmidhi, no. 3297, Ibn Saʿd, 1/435, and Abu Nuʿaym, Hilyat al-Awliyaʾ, 4/350, transmit—on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbas—that Abu Bakr said, “O Messenger of Allah, you have grown old.” He replied: “Surat Hud, al-Waqiʿa, al-Mursalat, ʿAmma yatasaʾalun (al-Nabaʾ), and Idha al-shamsu kuwwirat (al-Takwir) have made me grow old.” Al-Tirmidhi judged the report hasan, while al-Hakim (2/344, 476) declared it sahih and al-Dhahabi agreed.
Ibn Saʿd, 1/436, also records it through the chain of Qatadah with the wording: “Hud and its sisters have made me grow old.” Its transmitters are trustworthy, though the chain is mursal. Al-Tabarani relates it in al-Muʿjam al-Kabir from ʿUqba b. ʿAmir; al-Haythami comments in Majmaʿ al-Zawaʾid, 7/37, that its narrators are those of the Sahih collections. The same theme is reported from ʿImran b. Husayn in al-Khatib’s Tarikh, 3/145, with a sahih isnad.
Abu ʿAli’s vision is recorded by al-Bayhaqi in Shuʿab al-Iman, as cited in al-Suyuti’s al-Durr al-Manthur, 3/320.
