299 – al-Nasāʾī, Abū al-Qāsim ʿAbd Allāh b. Aḥmad b. Muḥammad *
The jurist, mufti, and chief ḥadīth authority of Khurāsān: Abū al-Qāsim ʿAbd Allāh b. Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. Yaʿqūb al-Nasāʾī, a Shāfiʿī.
He was the last surviving pupil to have heard al-Ḥasan b. Sufyān recite his Muʿsnad, and likewise the last to have heard from ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad b. Shīrawayh the Musnad of Isḥāq.
He travelled to ʿIrāq and received ḥadīth from Muḥammad b. Muḥammad al-Bāghandī and a number of others.
Al-Ḥākim and others narrated from him, but none of his elevated isnāds has reached me.
He lectured in Baghdad during the days of ʿUthmān b. al-Sammāk; among those who heard him there were Aḥmad b. Jaʿfar al-Khuttulī and Abū al-Qāsim ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Thallāj. He remained alive until the present time.
Al-Khaṭīb reports that al-Ḥākim said: “He died in Shawwāl of the year 382 AH in Nasā (1).”
Yet in my copy of al-Ḥākim’s History it says that he died in 384 AH—Allah knows best.
Al-Ḥākim also said: “He was the foremost shaykh of probity and learning in Nasā, and he lived a little over ninety years (2).”
