The Seal of Prophethood:
Hātim ibn Ismāʿīl reported: al-Juʿayd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān narrated to us, saying, “I heard al-Sāʾib ibn Yazīd relate: My maternal aunt took me to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, ‘Messenger of Allah, my sister’s son is unwell.’ He wiped over my head and prayed for blessing, then performed ablution, and I drank from the water of his ablution. After that I stood behind him and looked at the Seal between his shoulders; it was like the egg of a partridge.” Al-Bukhārī and Muslim both record this ḥadīth, and the reading “riz al-ḥajlah” is a mistake—the correct wording refers to “its egg.”
Isrāʾīl narrated from Simāk, who heard Jābir ibn Samurah say: “The face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was round, like the sun and the moon. I saw the Seal of Prophethood between his shoulders; it was like a pigeon’s egg and blended with his skin.” Muslim transmits this report.
Hammād ibn Zayd—and others—reported: ʿĀṣim al-Aḥwal narrated to us from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Sarjis, who said: “I walked behind the Prophet ﷺ and observed the Seal of Prophethood between his shoulders, beside the upper part of his left shoulder blade. It was a raised lump on which were several small moles resembling warts.” Muslim gives a longer version of this narration.
Abū Dāwūd al-Ṭayālisī said: Qurrāh ibn Khālid narrated to us; he said: Muʿāwiyah ibn Qurrāh narrated from his father, who said: “I came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, ‘Messenger of Allah, show me—’”
