I read to Ahmad ibn Hibat Allah, from ʿAbd al-Muʿizz ibn Muhammad. Tamim ibn Abi Saʿid related to us, and Abu Saʿd al-Kanjarudhi related to us in the year 449 AH. He said:
The ḥāfiẓ informed us; Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn al-Husayn al-Masarjisi informed us; Ishaq al-Hanzali narrated to us; ʿAbd al-ʿAziz ibn Muhammad informed us; ʿUbayd Allah narrated to us, from Nafiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who said:
“Whoever associates partners with Allah is not regarded as muḥṣan.” (1)
Abu Ahmad said, “I know of no one who has transmitted this from al-Darawardi except Ishaq.”
I (the author) add: This report already appeared under the biography of al-Masarjisi.
Abu ʿAbd Allah the ḥāfiẓ said: Abu Ahmad died while I was away, in Rabiʿ al-Awwal of the year 378 AH; he was ninety-three years old.
I further note: During that same year there also died the judge of Samarkand, Abu Saʿid al-Khalil ibn Ahmad al-Sijzi, the Hanafi preacher, at the age of ninety minus one; the mufti of Transoxiana, ʿAbd al-Karim ibn Muhammad ibn Musa al-Bukhari al-Mighi, a Hanafi ascetic; the Maliki shaykh, author of al-Tafriʿ, Abu al-Qasim ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Husayn ibn al-Jallab al-Baghdadi; the Musnid of Egypt, Shaykh Abu Bakr ʿAtiq ibn Musa al-Azdi al-Hatimi—he possessed the Muwattaʾ through the chain of Abu al-Raqraq from Yahya ibn Bukayr—and the ḥāfiẓ Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Ismaʿil ibn al-ʿAbbas al-Warraq, the author of Tilka—
