from him.
Jaʿfar ibn Burqān said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAqīl narrated to us, saying: “Anas ibn Mālik came to Madinah while ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz was its governor. ʿUmar sent a messenger to him and said, ‘Ask him whether the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ever dyed his hair, for I have seen some strands of his hair whose color had changed.’ Anas replied, ‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was blessed with natural blackness. If I were to count the grey hairs that faced me in his head and beard, I would not put them above eleven. What you have seen discolored comes only from the fragrance with which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would scent his hair; that is what altered its shade.’
Abū Ḥamzah al-Sukkarī narrated—from ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿUmayr, from Iyād ibn Laqīṭ, from Abū Rimthah—who said: “I came to the Prophet ﷺ while he was wearing two green mantles. His hair had been touched by grey, and the grey was reddish, dyed with henna.”
Abū Nuʿaym said: ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Iyād ibn Laqīṭ narrated to us; he said: My father related to me, from Abū Rimthah, who said: “I went with my father to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When I saw him my father asked, ‘Do you know who this is?’ I replied, ‘No.’ He said, ‘This is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.’ I shuddered when he said that; I had imagined the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to be something unlike other people, yet there he was, a human being with a full head of hair bearing a trace of henna, and he was dressed in two green mantles.”
ʿAmr ibn Muḥammad al-ʿAnqazī said: Ibn Abī Rawād informed us, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, that the Prophet ﷺ used to wear Sabtī sandals and would tint his beard yellow with wars (a yellow dye plant) and saffron.
Al-Naḍr ibn Shumayl said: Ṣāliḥ ibn Abī al-Akhdar narrated to us, from al-Zuhrī—
