Isrāʾīl also narrated—from Samāk, on the authority of Jābir ibn Samurah—who said: “The front of the Prophet’s head and his beard had begun to turn grey; when he applied oil and combed it, the grey was not noticeable.” Muslim recorded it.
Abū Ḥamzah al-Sukkarī reported from ʿUthmān ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Mūhib al-Qurashī: “We visited Umm Salamah, and she brought out some of the Messenger of Allah’s hair ﷺ for us. It was reddish, dyed with henna and katam (a dark-leaf dye).”
This report is authentic. Al-Bukhārī likewise transmitted it—through Salām ibn Abī Muṭīʿ from ʿUthmān—though he did not mention “henna and katam.”
Isrāʾīl further narrated from ʿUthmān ibn Mūhib: “Umm Salamah kept a large silver jaljal (bell-shaped container) that held some of the Prophet’s hair ﷺ. Whenever anyone was struck by fever, he would send for it; she would shake the hair in water, and the person would sprinkle that water on his face. My family once sent me to her; she produced it, and it was about this size”—Isrāʾīl indicated three fingers—“and it contained a few reddish strands.” Al-Bukhārī.
Muḥammad ibn Abān al-Mustamlī related: Bishr ibn al-Sarī told us, saying: Abān al-ʿAṭṭār told us, from Yaḥyā ibn Abī Kathīr, from Abū Salamah, that Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Zayd informed him that his father was present with the Prophet ﷺ at the place of sacrifice together with a man from the Anṣār. The Messenger of Allah distributed the sacrificial animals among his Companions, but nothing reached him or his companion. The Prophet then shaved his head over his cloak and handed the hair to him; he distributed portions of it among certain men, and he clipped his nails and gave them to the companion. He said, “That hair is still with us, dyed with henna and katam.” This is a mursal report.
Shurayk narrated from ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿUmar, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, who said: “The grey hairs of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ numbered about twenty.” Yaḥyā ibn Ādam also transmitted it.
