220 – al-Ahdab the Scribe *
He lived in Baghdad, forging handwriting so skillfully that no one doubted it was the person’s own script.
ʿAḍud al-Dawlah favored him, and he went on issuing royal decrees in his distinctive hand, bending the text to whatever he desired (1).
He died in Baghdad in 370 AH.
(*) His name, as recorded in the biographical sources, is Ali b. Muhammad al-Ahdab. See his entry in: Ibn al-Jawzi, Al-Muntazam, vol. 7, p. 111; Ibn al-Athir, Al-Kamil, vol. 9, pp. 8-9; Ibn Kathir, Al-Bidaya wa-l-nihaya, vol. 11, p. 299.
(1) Al-Kamil relates that whenever Adud al-Dawla wished to set kings against each other, he would order this man to forge a letter in one ruler’s own hand, addressed to another, agreeing to some plot that would damage their relations; he then ensured the forged letter reached its target, thereby sowing discord between them.
