I am like a drop in an ocean; and I heard him say, “Beside Shaykh al-Ashʿarī I am but a drop next to a sea.”
214 – Ibn Mujāhid, Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Ṭāʾī *
The master Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Yaʿqūb ibn Mujāhid al-Ṭāʾī al-Baṣrī, one of Abū al-Ḥasan al-Ashʿarī’s close companions.
He came to Baghdad, produced a number of writings, and lectured on kalām (dialectical theology); Qāḍī Abū Bakr ibn al-Ṭayyib studied under him.
Al-Khaṭīb said: “Several informants told us that he was deeply reserved, devout, and of excellent conduct.”
Abū Bakr al-Barqānī also praised him warmly and—so far as I can tell—met him in Baghdad. ⦗1⦘
