Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Masʿūd ibn Nāṣir informed us; ʿAlī ibn Bushrā informed us; Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Muḥammad narrated to us; ʿAmmār ibn Rajāʾ narrated to us; al-Ḥafari narrated to us, from Sufyān, from al-Aswad ibn Qays, from Thaʿlabah ibn ʿIbād, from Samurah, that the Prophet ﷺ delivered a sermon until the sun was eclipsed, whereupon he said, “To proceed…”.

211 – al-Juludi, Abū Aḥmad al-Naysābūrī *
An imām, ascetic, exemplar, and truthful authority, Abū Aḥmad al-Naysābūrī al-Juludi, the transmitter of Sahih Muslim from the jurist Ibrāhīm ibn Muḥammad ibn Sufyān.
He narrated from: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Shīrawayh, Ibn Sufyān, and Aḥmad ibn Ibrāhīm.

(1) Ahmad also recorded it (5/16, 17) and al-Nasaʾi (3/152) through the route of Abu Dawud al-Hafari with this same chain. No one besides Ibn Hibban declared Thalabah b. ʿAbad reliable; Ibn al-Madini listed him among the unknown transmitters from whom al-Aswad b. Qays narrates. Ibn Hazm judged him “unknown,” a verdict repeated by Ibn al-Qattan, and Ibn al-Mawwaq reported the same from al-ʿAjli. Ahmad transmitted a longer version (5/11), as did Abu Dawud (1184) and al-Nasaʾi (3/140), through two routes from Zuhayr, from al-Aswad b. Qays, with this chain. Al-Hakim (1/329-330) was mistaken—and al-Dhahabi followed him—when he declared the report authentic according to their criteria, even though Thalabah b. ʿAbad is absent from the two Sahihs and is only deemed trustworthy by Ibn Hibban. Ibn Hibban himself recorded the full text (no. 597). Al-Tirmidhi (562) produced an abridged version via Mahmud b. Ghailan, from Wakiʿ, from Sufyan, from al-Aswad b. Qays, from Thalabah b. ʿAbad, from Samurah b. Jundub: “The Prophet ﷺ led us in a solar-eclipse prayer, during which we could not hear his voice.” Al-Tirmidhi graded it “hasan sahih.” Al-Hakim (1/334) reproduced the same chain and wording, calling it “sahih on the conditions of the two shaykhs, though they did not include it,” whereupon al-Dhahabi objected: “Thalabah is unknown, and they narrated nothing from him.” (*) Al-Ansab 3:283-285; al-Muntazam 7:97; al-Lubab 1:288; al-ʿIbar 2:348; al-Wafi bi-l-wafayat 4:297; al-Bidaya wa-l-nihaya 11:294; al-Nujum al-zahira 4:133; Shadharat al-dhahab 3:87; Taraj al-ʿArus, vol. 2, p. 323.
