182 – al-Mutawwiʿī, Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Ḥasan ibn Saʿīd ibn Jaʿfar
The shaykh, the imām, the master of the Qurʾān reciters (shaykh al-qurrāʾ), and the musnid of his age: Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Ḥasan ibn Saʿīd ibn Jaʿfar al-ʿAbbādānī al-Mutawwiʿī, who took up residence in Istakhr.
He was born around 270 AH.
He heard ḥadith from Abū Muslim al-Kajji, Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Nasāʾī, Idrīs ibn ʿAbd al-Karīm the reciter—claiming that he had recited the Qurʾān to him—and from a number of other senior scholars.
He also received material from al-Ḥasan ibn al-Muthannā, Jaʿfar al-Firyābī, Abū Khalīfah, and many others.
Abū Nuʿaym said: “He came to Isfahān. He was a leading authority on the Qurʾān and its memorisation, though there was some leniency in his transmission.”
I say: Among those who narrated from him were Abū Nuʿaym, Abū Bakr ibn Abī ʿAlī, Muḥammad ibn ʿUbayd Allāh al-Shīrāzī; and Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Kārazīnī (1) and a group of others recited the Qurʾān to him.
His father was an exhorter and a ḥadith scholar.
In 367 AH he stated, “I am eighty-nine years old.”
He has a biographical entry in Tabaqāt al-Qurrāʾ.
