I read aloud before Isḥāq ibn Ṭāriq, who told us; Abū al-Qāsim ibn Rawāḥah told us; al-Silafī told us; Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Mardawayh told us; ʿAlī ibn ʿUmar al-Asdabādhī told us; Abū Bakr ibn al-Sunnī told me; Ibrāhīm ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Ḍaḥḥāk narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Sanjar narrated to us; Asad ibn Mūsā narrated to us; Bakr ibn Khunays, from Ḍirār ibn ʿAmr, from Ibn Sīrīn—or someone else—from al-Aḥnaf ibn Qays, who heard ʿUmar, may Allah be pleased with him, say to Ḥafṣah: “I adjure you by Allah! Do you know that the Messenger of Allah—Allah bless him and grant him peace—would set aside his clothes in order to bathe, and Bilāl would then come to summon him to the prayer, yet he could not find a garment in which to go out until he had put his own clothes back on, whereupon he would proceed to the prayer in them?” Its chain of transmission is weak (1).
Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad al-ʿAlawī informed us; Ibn Bāqā informed us; Abū Zurʿah informed us; Ibn Ḥamad informed us; Aḥmad ibn al-Ḥusayn informed us; Abū Bakr ibn al-Sunnī informed us; Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Nasāʾī narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn al-Naḍr ibn Musāwir informed us; Jaʿfar ibn Sulaymān, on the authority of Thābit, on the authority of Anas, reported:
“Abū Ṭalḥah proposed marriage to Umm Sulaym. She said, ‘By Allah, O Abū Ṭalḥah, a man like you is not to be turned away, but you are an unbeliever while I am a Muslim. It is not lawful for me to marry you. If you embrace Islam, that will be my bride-price, and I will ask nothing else of you.’ He embraced Islam, and that became her dowry.”
Thābit said, “I have never heard of any woman whose bridal gift was nobler than that of Umm Sulaym—namely, Islam itself.” He then consummated the marriage with her, and she bore him a child (2).
