and offered the salutation of peace, which was returned to him. The Qur’an-reader went on reciting exactly as before, and no one dared to shift from his place. Pages and servants bustled back and forth between the Commander of the Faithful and the doorway, and from the doorway back to him, until he rose, exchanged farewells and withdrew.
Ibn Ḥayyān said: I followed him. He mounted a horse, the senior commanders surrounding him, and rode on until he halted before Ibn Mujāhid, who was reading from a muṣḥaf (Qur’an codex). The Commander of the Faithful greeted him, saying, “Peace be upon you, Abū Bakr.” He replied, “And upon you be peace, and the mercy and blessings of Allah,” offered a few brief supplications for him, then turned back to his muṣḥaf. The Commander of the Faithful thereupon returned to his residence.
