Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

“O you who reproach me! Had you, at the very hour of reproof, known my plight beneath those banners …”
—an exquisite verse indeed.

Hasan then secured full authority, married his cousin Fatimah, and his name was invoked from the pulpits in place of Abū al-Fawāris’ until the middle of Shaʿbān 358 AH. At that point the North-African army under Jawhar marched in, seized the realm, and the Ikhshīdīd dynasty—after thirty-five years—came to an end.

Hasan had earlier fled from the Qarmatians, who had taken Ramla from him. He entrenched himself in Egypt, arrested the vizier Ibn Hinzābah, then withdrew to Syria. There he fought the Maghribī troops alongside Jaʿfar ibn Falaḥ; Jaʿfar captured him and sent him to Egypt, where he was jailed for a while but was not harmed. I do not know whether he remained long in prison or was later pardoned; what is certain is that he died in Rajab 371 AH in Egypt, and al-ʿAzīz bi-llāh led the funeral prayer for him in the palace.

As for the young Abū al-Fawāris, he lived on until Rabīʿ al-Awwal 377 AH, when he passed away.

158 – al-Juʿal, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAlī al-Baṣrī *
The jurist and theologian, a prolific author and an ocean of learning, yet a Muʿtazilī propagandist. He was also counted among the leading Ḥanafīs.

Al-Khaṭīb said: “He produced numerous works on Muʿtazilī theology.” al-Ṣaymarī told me:
