Yaḥyā ibn ʿAbd Allāh, the client of the Banū Hāshim, narrated to us; Shuʿbah narrated to us; from ʿAmr ibn Dīnār; from Abū Hāshim; from Abū Saʿīd, who said:
The Prophet ﷺ said to ʿAmmār, “A rebellious faction will kill you.” (1)
131 – Nāṣir al-Dawlah al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ḥamdān al-Taghlibī*
He was the ruler of Mosul—King Nāṣir al-Dawlah, al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ḥamdān ibn Ḥamdūn ibn al-Ḥārith ibn Luqmān al-Taghlibī—brother of King Sayf al-Dawlah, both sons of the commander Abū al-Hayjāʾ.
He was older than his brother in both age and stature, and he was the one who slew Muḥammad ibn Rāʾiq after the latter had seized power.
When his brother died (2) he was overcome with grief; his temperament deteriorated and he lapsed into melancholy, so his sons placed him under guardianship. His son Abū Taghlib al-Ghadanfar then took control, lodging him in a fortress (3) yet providing for him with comfort and honor. He fought in a number of wars and had many notable engagements.
(1) Ahmad also recorded it (3/28) through Sulayman b. Dawud, from Shuʿbah, with this same chain; again in Ahmad (3/5) through Ibn Abi ʿAdi, from Dawud, from Abu Nadrah, from Abu Saʿid; and Muslim (no. 2915, “Book of Tribulations”) through two chains from Muhammad b. Jaʿfar, from Shuʿbah, from Abu Muslimah, from Abu Nadrah, from Abu Saʿid al-Khudri, who said: “Someone better than I (namely Abu Qatadah) told me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to ʿAmmar while he was digging the trench, wiping the dust from his head: ‘Poor son of Sumayyah, a rebellious faction will kill you.’” Ahmad also transmitted it (3/22; 3/90–91) through two chains from Khalid, from ʿIkrimah, from Abu Saʿid. The hadith is well-known—even mutawatir—and was narrated by several Companions; see Fath al-Bari 1/452.

(3) Ibn Khallikan states that his son sent him to the fortress of Ardimasht in Hisn al-Salama, and quotes Ibn al-Athir to the effect that this fortress is the one known as Qawashi; see Wafayat al-Aʿyan 2/116.
