in his prayer when a man called out: “Messenger of Allah, the dates have set our stomachs on fire, and even our patched sandals (al-khanaf) have fallen apart!”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ praised and extolled Allah, mentioned the hardship he had suffered from his own people, and then said: “I remember a time—my Companion and I—when we spent some fifteen nights with nothing to eat but al-barīr, the fruit of the arāk tree. Then we reached our brothers from the Anṣār, and they shared their food with us; most of what they had was dates. By Him in whose hand is my soul, if I had the means to give you bread and meat, I would certainly feed them to you. Yet a time is coming—whoever among you lives to see it—when you will wear garments like the hangings of the Kaʿbah, and great platters will be brought to you morning and evening.”
They asked, “Messenger of Allah, shall we be better then or are we better today?” He replied, “You are better today. Today you are brothers; but on that day some of you will strike the necks of others.”
Muḥammad ibn Yūsuf al-Firyābī said: Siyyān reported—from Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd—from Abū Mūsā Yaḥnus—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “When my community walks with a swagger and the Persians and Byzantines serve them, they will be set upon one another.” This is a mursal report.
ʿUthmān ibn Ḥakīm narrated—from ʿĀmir ibn Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ—from his father—who said: “We travelled with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until we passed the mosque of Banū Muʿāwiyah. He entered it and prayed two rakʿahs, and we prayed with him. He then conversed with his Lord for a long time and afterwards said: ‘I asked my Lord for three things: I asked Him not to destroy my community by drowning, and He granted me that; I asked Him not to destroy my community through famine, and He granted me that; and I asked Him not to make their violence fall upon one another—but He withheld that from me.’”
