The soundest opinion is that Abū al-Tufayl passed away in 110 AH.
Ibrāhīm ibn Muḥammad ibn Ziyād al-Alhānī reported—from his father—from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Busr—that the Prophet ﷺ said to him, “This lad will live a full century,” and he did indeed live one hundred years.
Bishr ibn Bakr and al-Walīd ibn Muslim said: al-Awzāʿī narrated to us; al-Zuhrī narrated to him; Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib narrated to him: A baby boy was born to the brother of Umm Salamah, and they named him al-Walīd. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “You are naming your children after your Pharaohs! Change his name”—so they called him ʿAbd Allāh—“for a man called al-Walīd will arise in this community who will be more harmful to my nation than Pharaoh was to his own people.”
This report is firmly established from Ibn al-Musayyib, and—according to the sound view—his mursal transmissions are acceptable evidence.
Sulaymān ibn Bilāl narrated—from al-ʿAlāʾ ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān—from his father—from Abū Hurayrah—that the Prophet ﷺ said: “When the descendants of Abū al-ʿĀṣ reach forty men, they will turn Allah’s religion into a ruse, make His servants their chattel, and treat Allah’s wealth as personal spoils.” The report is singular, yet its transmitters are trustworthy.
Al-Aʿmash also related—from ʿAṭiyyah—from Abū Saʿīd—a tradition traced back to the Prophet ﷺ with the same wording, except that he said, “thirty men.”
Sulaymān ibn Ḥayyān al-Aḥmar said: Dāwūd ibn Abī Hind narrated to us, from Abū Ḥarb ibn Abī al-Aswad al-Dīlī, from Ṭalḥah al-Naṣrī, who said:
“I arrived in Medina as an emigrant. When someone came to Medina, if he had a sponsor (ʿarīf) he would lodge with him, but if he had no sponsor he would stay in the Suffah, so I stayed in the Suffah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pair men together and allot a mudd of dates between them. One day, while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was…"
