about paying his alms (zakah) in advance before it fell due, and the Prophet permitted him to do so. (1)
Zayn al-Umanaʾ keeps a fascicle of Ibn Faḍālah that is different from the one in the possession of al-Shīrāzī, while the first fascicle of Ibn Faḍālah’s Dictations is held by the ḥadith scholar Qāsim b. ʿAsākir.
Among Ibn Faḍālah’s teachers is his own father, Mūsā, who narrates from Sulaymān b. Bint Shurahbīl.
- Ibn al-Qaṭṭān – Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. Aḥmad al-Baghdādī
One of the foremost Shāfiʿī scholars, Abū al-Ḥusayn Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. Aḥmad al-Baghdādī.
Al-Khaṭīb said: “He authored works on both the principles of jurisprudence and its subsidiary rulings.”
He died in 359 AH.
Al-Khaṭīb mentioned him only in brief.
He studied under Ibn Surayj and then under Abū Isḥāq al-Marwazī. He later assumed a teaching post, his name became well-known, and Abū Isḥāq listed him in ‘al-Ṭabaqāt.’
(1) Ahmad (1/104); Ibn Saʿd, al-Tabaqat (4/26); Abu Dawud (1624); al-Tirmidhi (678); Ibn Majah (1795); al-Darimi (1/385); Ibn al-Jarud, al-Muntaqa (360); al-Daraqutni (2/123); and al-Bayhaqi (4/111) all transmit the report through the chain of Saʿid ibn Mansur.
After citing it (2/115), Abu Dawud adds: “Hushaym narrated this hadith from Mansur ibn Zadhan, from al-Hakam, from al-Hasan ibn Muslim, from the Prophet ﷺ, and Hushaym’s version is sounder”—that is, the mursal version is more reliable than the musnad one.
Al-Daraqutni states in his Sunan (2/124): “The transmitters differed as to al-Hakam’s chain; the correct version is the mursal report from al-Hasan ibn Muslim.”
The hadith is supported by other chains that raise its status; see Sunan al-Daraqutni (2/123, 125).
Ibn Hajar remarks in Fath al-Bari (3/264) after reviewing these routes: “Taken together, they make it plausible that the story of al-ʿAbbas paying his zakah in advance is authentic.”
