al-Hajjāji, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥākim, and ʿAbd al-Ghāfir al-Fārisi.
The emir ʿAbd Allāh summoned Abū Bakr Ibn Durayd to tutor this very son of his.
Concerning him Ibn Durayd says in the Maqṣūrah:
(1) The princely son of Mīkāl revived me
after I had become a discarded thing.
(2) Abū al-ʿAbbās spread my shoulders wide
after my reach and arm-span had grown short.
(3) My soul is a ransom for my lord, and may
all beneath the sky be a ransom for my lord.
Al-Ḥākim said: I heard al-Waḍḍāḥī say, “I heard Abū al-ʿAbbās mention the gift his son sent to Ibn Durayd when he composed the Maqṣūrah. I asked, ‘How much actually reached him from you?’ He replied, ‘At that time my hand could reach only three hundred dinars, and I laid them before him.’ (4)
Al-Ḥākim also said: He was offered several prestigious governorships, but he declined them.
He died in Ṣafar 362 AH, at the age of ninety-two.
I say: His audition from ʿAbdān took place in 298 AH.
Two elevated fascicles have come down to us through his transmission.
